Tabloid Scum

23 04 2003

There is one thing that I cannot stand (ok, there are plenty I admit!), but one of them is tabloid journalism. I mean, over the weekend, the Schumacher brothers showed what I, and everyone I’ve spoken to, along with everyone in the Formula One world, think was extradonary bravery, dedication and professionalism in deciding to race despite the death of their mother just a few hours prior to the start of the race. Both Michael and Ralf were at their mother, Elizabeth’s bedside in Germany on Saturday night, before deciding to fly back to Italy to race on Sunday morning in what must have been the most difficult circumstances imaginable.

As a result of this, they have received praise all around, from both their own teams, and other teams within Formula One, yet despite this, the German and English Tabloid media have decided to tuck into them and criticise them for their actions. See below excerpt from a piece on ITV-F1

”Schumi - Was That Right?” and ”Heartless Heroes”, were two of the headlines on the Monday morning after the race.

The Schumachers have come in for a hard time from the German press in recent months. Ralf has been dogged by allegations over his private life while Michael was labelled “a baboon” in certain quarters following his poor start to the season.

Even the British press could not resist asking questions with The Sun wondering whether the Schumachers were “ice-cool professionals or just cold robots”?
