David Coulthard was left red-faced after an awards ceremony joke was met by stony silence.

Coulthard made the gaffe when presenting legendary Ukrainian pole vaulter Sergei Bubka with a Laureus Sports awards in Monaco.

The McLaren star, who was joined on stage by American actress Laura Harring, introduced Bubka as a “Ukrainian with a big pole”.

But the audience, which included Prince Albert of Monaco, Kylie Minogue, John McEnroe and Ronaldo, failed to see the funny side.

Coulthard told The Mail On Sunday: “There was a very detailed script on the autocue and I was meant to introduce Sergei Bubka as being from the Ukraine and famous for the pole vault.

“We rehearsed it so it wouldn’t be quite so stop-start.

“But I decided to forget it and tried to be amusing by saying he’s famous for having a big pole.

“In my head I was giggling away, thinking how funny I am. But nobody laughed.”
