New U2 Album Cover

30 09 2004

So, there’s a new U2 album on the way, yay to that, however, I have seen the cover for the new album How to dismantle an Atomic Bomb and I have to say, in my opinion (and that of many others) that the new cover just is not nice, let’s hope it’s not a reflection of what’s to come inside, however, I doubt this will be the case

Priest busted for using ‘free’ wlan hotspot

30 09 2004

Following on from a discussion on #linux about the rights and wrongs of ip-over-dns, and the rights and wrongs of how wlan hotspots are used, I was reminded of this blog entry that I read recently. In it, AKMA writes how he was using a public WiFi network outside of a library. A policeman approached him and asked that he only access the Internet from within the Library and hinted that Federal Laws against “signal theft” were applicable. Well worth a read….

Digital Photography Books

29 09 2004

Courtesy of The Irish Gallery of Photography, I tonight stumbled upon shortcourses.com, which at first glance at least, appears to be an excellent resource on digital photography, imaging, equipment and technique. There are also links to the Kodak Digital Learning Centre I now have them linked and will be doing lots of reading there over the coming days.

Clinton on the mend

29 09 2004

It’s good to read, via BBC News that Bill Clinton is making a speedy recovery, already walking up to an hour a day and is preparing to honour commitments for speaches, starting on November 9th (which happens to be a week after the election). Whether or not he is going to come back to help John Kerry rescue his flagging election bid is another story that we still don’t know

Google News and the PRC

29 09 2004

Google have blogged a very interesting piece on their GoogleBlog today, which relates to the excellent Google News, and it’s chinese implementation. I have to admit to being fascinated by China, the country, it’s economic revolution currently taking place, it’s size, and it’s political control over it’s people. Some of this fascination comes from a fear of what might be in say 5 or 10 years when China really does become a world super-power.

As many people know, China censors media / internet access for it’s people, the government decideing what they do and don’t want their people to know, and quite often distorting the truth that does get through to their people. In their blog entry, Google speak of how they had to take the decision not to include sources that are inaccessible from within China to appear in the Google News China site. This would appear to be a very difficult decision for Google to make, for the obvious reasons.

The Google Team’s opinions on this are well worth a read if you have a moment

It’s ok, I’m ok…for now

29 09 2004

Well, having said yesterday that I thought I felt some sort of illness coming on, it turns out that I’m all ok again, lots of Vitamin C seems to be helping, so, fingers crossed I’ll be ok for now, though, I do know I won’t escape forever! :(

That sickening feeling

28 09 2004

It’s that time of year where everyone around you starts dropping like flies and getting sick and stuff, and you just know it’s coming your way! The wee brother is currently at home sick, so, it’s in the house, and people here in the office are starting to sneeze in unison, which no doubt means it’s coming my way shortly. I’m already on the Vitamin C to try some firefighting, as there’s a pretty nasty chest infection doing the rounds that I just don’t want to catch!
