Tom Stoddart @ Gallery of Photography

29 11 2004

The Irish Gallery of Photography will be showing an exhibition by Tom Stoddart from December 3rd to January 30th. Unfortunatly, the gallery have not yet updated their website with details, however, hopefully it will be done soon. Tom is an amazing photographer, and I can’t wait to get in and check out the exhibition.

The aftermath

29 11 2004

So, after the fun and games of yesterday, I was away down the country early today. Thankfully, I managed to get home in daylight and got out to take the below images of the still smouldering aftermath of yesterdays fire.

So much for a quiet Sunday

28 11 2004

So, there I was sitting around having a nice lazy Sunday, when next thing Mom runs out of the sitting room telling me to get out, someone was setting a van on fire down the field. I ran up the hall, grabbed the keys of my car and headed out. Mom said that she saw the car leaving, that it was a red car, and it was headed away from the house.

So, I hopped into my car, grabbing my camera before hand and headed down the road in pursuit. They were taking the quiet country roads towards Drogheda, so, I floored it, and managed to catch up with them about three miles from the house. I took some pictures of the back of the car from inside mine whilst following them, making sure I got the registration details etc before making a very quick about turn and heading back towards home to get some pics of the van itself.

At this stage, the police and fire brigade had been called. The van had been parked beside a load of large straw bales, and these had caught fire also. I went into the field to take the below pictures before the guards arrived. I was just back at the house when they arrived, and showed them the evidence on camera. They asked that we phone all this through to the local police station whilst they investigated the fire.

Once this was done, I headed back out to get some more pictures. By now, the fire brigade, more police, the owner of the straw and the neighbours had arrived also. I have a load more photo’s to post at a later stage, but, they need some work before hand.

The police were amazed by the amount of evidence we had gathered, and were most pleased by it. They had already run the reg of the car I had followed, and were trying to get hold of them in Drogheda. The fire brigade decided they weren’t going to put the fire out, as it wasn’t really a threat to anyone (apart from the smoke that is still billowing over our house!).

I’ll write more about this at a later stage I’ve no doubt, for now, I’ve to try and get some sleep as I’m up at 4:30 to head down the country, and, I don’t want to say anything I shouldn’t whilst the police are still investigating, but, needless to say, it livened up my weekend a little.

Yet another amazing image

26 11 2004

This here is yet another truly amazing image that I have found on PhotoSig. I have to say, it’s one of the best composed images that I have seen in quite a long time, backed up by the fact that pretty much everyone who has critiqued it has given it 3TU!!

After the Sunset

26 11 2004

I went to see After the Sunset with Mom and Barry last night. We were at a loose end for something to do, and Mom suggested the cinema, so, I agreed. I haven’t been keeping tracks of what’s on at the moment, but, she said that she had heard of After the Sunset and being a Pierce Brosnan fan, wanted to go see it.

So, away we went, knowing nothing about it, and I have to say it was really, really good. There’s lots of humour, action and funny quirks, the sequence where he steals the diamond is loaded with suspense, and there’s a great twist at the end. Pierce, Salma Hayek (yum!) and Woody Harrelson are all well known faces, however, the other main actress was someone I recognised, but, couldn’t place! It turns out, she’s Naomie Harris, who people who’ve read here before, know I love from one of my favourite films 28 Days Later. What really threw me was probably her really good Carribean accent, instead of her London accent in 28 Days!

What a gallery

25 11 2004

I’ve just found one of the most amazing galleries of mainly landscape photography that I’ve seen in quite a while. This guy has the eye alright!

Checking up on prices is a good thing

24 11 2004

I bought my new camera yesterday from technikdirekt.de, however, today, whilst flicking through their site, I realised that the 20D with 17-85 kit was more expensive than buying the 20D body and 17-85 lens seperately.

So, I decided to call TechnikDirekt and see what was going on. The girl I spoke to was most helpful and said that there was obviously some problem (given that Canon list the kit less than buying seperately, I’d say so!) and that she would look into it. So, she went away to check things out, and came back to me a few minutes later saying that she would re-order things for me with a saving of EUR 172!! Yeah, I’m shocked this slipped through the net, but I’m delighted I spotted it in time! :)

UPDATE

WOW, I’ve just received the new order confirmation form from them, and it turns out, I have made a saving of EUR 250 on the original price! :)

‘Hair on the back of your neck moment’

24 11 2004

A picture tells a thousand words, right?! Well, so the saying goes, and for the most part this is true. But, every now and then a picture has the power to smack you in the face and catch your breath for very diffent reasons to that which would normally happen. Viewing this image on PhotoSig has just made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and two minutes later, still manages to do so, it’s powerful, and will catch you, but it’s well worth viewing.
