RIP Little P

4 01 2005

I woke up this morning to the shocking news that a childhood hero of mine, Paul Darragh, aka Little P died yesterday from what looks like a massive heart attack at the age of just 51. As a keen horseman as a child, I always thought of Paul as a great man, and having met him a few times out and about the circuit, he always proved so.

My abiding memory of him will be from one evening at a show in Cavan Equistrian Centre where from what I can remember, my father was sponsoring events, Paul Darragh set out to walk the course. Nothing too unusual there I hear you say, however, in walking the course, Paul was able to walk under every fence which he was about to jump, all without having to duck or stoop in the slightest. This was a mighty sign of bravery to me. Ok, so I was always taller than he, but, the thought of setting out to jump a fence taller than me really did freak me out, and is a memory that will always stick with me, it’s sad to see him go.
