Only on the Northside….

3 03 2005

…would you find an overweight twenty-something mother, dressed in a pink tracksuit, wearing gold hoops and showing far too many love handles saying the following to her 3 or 4 year old daughter….”if you take that jacket off I’m gonna box ya in the face, d’ya hear, and then I’m gonna phone yer granny and tell her to burn all your toys at home…”

Enough of the Northside jabs! You’d see that in some kips on the southside….but you’re right only in Dublin! Although the granny burning the toys comment did shock! What do you think of the new trend of knackers going out and about in their pyjama bottoms?

Heh, if I let you in on a little secret, I actually spent quite a lot of my childhood growing up in Artane!! But, I’ve well and truly lost my northside roots now that I live out in the Royal County!

I’m not saying that you don’t see the same out the south-side (I mean there are bridges for Northsiders to cross after all…lol!). But seriously, you do notice a massive difference between north and south. I’m currently spending quite a lot of time in no-man’s land (Temple Bar) so get to wander between the two sides and compare.

As for the PJ brigade, I actually remember seeing that trend start in Glasgow about 2 years ago, and it seems to have taken a while to jump the water. AND…shock horror, the first time I remember seeing it was around the heights of D4 of all places (though in fairness, they were Burberry PJ’s!!).

WOW, you saw that in Glasgow? Jeez that surprises me. I grew up in London, I couldn’t understand the North South side thing when I came here and I still don’t!

Everything that you see in stereotypical inner and north Dublin you see ten fold in and around the Barra’s (the Catholic, Parkhead end of Glasow). It really is another world altogether, and somewhat scary too, and makes Dublin look like the social elite!!

As for the North vs South side thing, to be honest, I think it’s something more played up by middle class south-siders trying to make themselves feel better for the most part. What I wrote was merely a little play on what I had just seen, I’d quite happily write something to slag the south-siders too (in fact, I almost wrote about a very funny conversation I heard on the Dort the other morning, but just didn’t have the time!!) ;o)

Although I live on the southside,in an area now known as westside, I lived on the northside for a few years and still do most of my buisness there and I have to say I prefare it to the southside, the people are no different than southsiders, except for the d4 crowd, and i can tell you from expierence that when the d4crowd are pissed their as common as muck, their accent slides as low as their knickers. The slagging match means nothing now between N+S, twenty years though you would get a kicking at a disco if you ran into a crowd of either side. As far as mammy fatso goes, it’s a pity that she’s passing on her mentality to her child, but she knows no better.
