“America is under attack”

12 05 2005

At 9:03 AM on 11 September 2001, the second airplane hit the South Tower of the World Trade Center. President Bush was in Florida, at the Emma T. Booker Elementary School, listening to children read. Chief of Staff Andrew Card came over and whispered in Bush’s ear, “A second plane hit the second tower. America is under attack.”

George Bush did not move from his seat, listening to childrens stories for quite some minutes.

According to this New York Times article, George Bush was out cycling yesterday, when Washington hit a Code Red Terrorist alert, and his Secret Service agents decided not to interrupt and inform him of events unfolding, until he had finished his cycle with his old school pal. Now, I for one find this somewhat hard to understand. Whilst it was only a Cessna that had strayed off course, with a max flight speed of 120mph, leaving enough time for military and security services to react, if this had been a passenger jet, things would have been happening a lot faster.

I just find it strange, that, post 9/11, things like this can still happen in a country at war.

As an interesting aside, I stumbled upon this interesting essay today, outlining the movements of key US government personell throught the attacks on 9/11. WARNING - whilst the evidence is gathered from many different sources, it does appear to have a somewhat anti-Bush slant to it.
