It’s always hard to lose a pet. Thankfully, this one had not had a lot of life experience, so there should be less emotional pain (although, when translated to humans, this can be even more tragic, in cases).
Over the years, I have had literally hundreds of pets – we used to supply hamsters and rats to local pet shops. A lot of those have died natural deaths in childhood as well. I remember a particular cat I used to call Shrimpy (he was the runt of the litter). He eventually died of cat flu before reaching his first birth-day.
I think possibly the most painful one was Patsy, though – a red setter who had the bad luck to stray onto the wrong road at the wrong time. I carried her half a mile home through very heavy rain and buried her in the back garden. She’ll be missed.
