Drinking in Ireland
4 11 2005Just sitting here listening to Pat Kenny on the Late Late Show doing a piece about drink culture amongst young people in Ireland. Just how fucked up is this country?! Have a look around some of the community websites out there such as myspace and search for Irish people. What do most of them say is their favourite hobby / passtime, yup, you’ve guessed it, they say drinking / being drunk!!
Now, I know, I don’t sit on a high horse, being as guilty as the rest for enjoying my drink and being drunk, however, I don’t drink for the sake of getting drunk, I drink because I enjoy drink, but, I can as easily go out and have a great night out without drink too, how many people out there in this country can say that however?!

Many claim to be able to enjoy nights out without alcohol but in reality very few mean it! Socialising in Ireland revolves around drink. I don’t really get it but then I don’t drink and have never been drunk so I guess that’s not surprising!
Imagine what trying to socialise in Ireland is like for an alcoholic? Pubs can be fine places for people even if they choose not to drink, but for those who don’t have the option its not such an enjoyable experience. And then you have that horrible Irish habit of constantly trying to persuade people to have a drink….
All said of course, I got rat arsed last night and more than likely do so tonight………….young women hey?!?
Ah, don’t get me wrong, I would rather not have a dry night out, but, often as a result of being on-call, or being the designated driver for the night, I end up not drinking, and never end up thinking it was a bad night just because I was not drinking!
I’ve no problem with people going out and drinking and having a good time, what bugs me is the Irish attitude to drink, and the way most people want to go out and get blotto at every possible occasion, and then go on to brag about how wasted they were
