Google News Ireland

31 01 2006

It’s always annoyed me up to now, that when I went to Google News Ireland, I got the US version of Google News, so, I’ve had to go to news.google.co.uk up to now to get the most relevant content for this part of the world.

But, as of today, this is no longer necessary, as Google have launched news.google.ie with Irish specific content up there! Yet another reason to love Google! :)

So Long Mr Greenspan

31 01 2006

Alan Greenspan, acknowledged to be the world’s greatest economic leader of our generation, packed his bags at the Fed today, and headed into what will hopefully be a happy, and is certainly a most deserved retirement. Greenspan is a fascinating and engaging character, and has been instrumental in keeping the US economy, and thus the Global Economy ticking for the past 18 years.

Here’s hoping that his successor, Ben Bernanke will have similar levels of success when he takes up the reins tomorrow morning. He’s not taking the economy on at it’s most challenging time, however, perhaps somewhat omniously, there is a tradition of a major upset in finincal markets occuring just after a new Fed chief takes the reins over the past number of successions.

Rossi looses it

31 01 2006

:( Unfortunately, Valentino Rossi’s much anticipated first run out against the cream of the current F1 crop turned out to be a very dissapointing affair today, as, the session was wet and tricky, and, after preventing him from going out for quite a while, when Ferrari did decide to send him out, unfortunately, he spun in the rain, on his first lap!!

Ah well, here’s hoping for a re-run sometime soon, where we will get to see just how good he is.

The wonderful Magnum Photos currently have an exhibition of Times Square Photography featured on their website. As a Magnum, and New York fan, this is pure joy to watch! :)

Rossi testing F1 tomorrow

30 01 2006

Nothing new about the headline, MotoGP star Valentino Rossi testing a F1 car I hear you say. He’s had several tests with Ferrari behind closed doors over the past year, fuelling rumours that he may well make a change from two to four wheels sometime very soon. The thought of that is oh so exciting, but, for now, has been denied by all associated.

BUT….tomorrow, in Valencia, Rossi will be testing a Ferrari, alongside most of the other F1 teams and drivers, which will be the first chance that we really get to see how he compares with the other teams and drivers out there! I am so excited by the prospect, I really do hope that he does well, and hopefully we will get to see him racing a Ferrari next year! What a treat that would be!! :)

Almost back

30 01 2006

Well, after almost a week of being offline excepting for a few minutes here and there, I’m now just about back to normal. I’ll be back in the office again tomorrow, and hopefully all will work out ok. My eye is getting a little tired on occasion, but, I suppose that’s to be expected. Since my last post, I ended up with my vision getting very blurry and the pain getting worse. It turns out that I had a reaction to the antibiotic cream that the doctor prescribed me, which resulted in the pain and blurred vision. A trip to Dublin and the Mater Eye Clinic resulted in me being bandaged up with an eye patch!!

I’ve missed out on so much blogging, reading and stuff over the past week. Just catching up on all things now. Going to be a busy week, have quite a bit to do, and a few things up my sleeve that will hopefully come to fruition over the next few days. Aside from that, there’s a great stretch in the evenings now, so, hopefully I’ll get out and about taking more photo’s over the next few weeks. Six Nations rugby starts this weekend also, which I really cannot wait for, getting dead excited at the thought of it now.

Anyways, I’m rambling, will get back to somewhat more coherent ramblings over the next few days with a bit of luck!

Ouch

25 01 2006

So, I’ve hardly been online today, on doctors orders!! I’ve somehow managed to scratch my eyeball / pupil, and have been in quite a lot of pain and able to see even less than normal as a result.

Not quite sure how it all happened, it can, and does happen to contact lens wearers, but, the pain didn’t start until about 2 hours after I took out my contacts yesterday. I’ve a funny feeling that something may have blown into my eye whilst out working on the data centre floor yesterday afternoon, but, not 100% sure about that either.

Regardless, I’ve been told to seriously curtail my time in front of a computer / television / reading / driving / exposed to bright lights for the next while. I don’t exactly get a choice on that anyways, my eye gets very sore and weeps really bad when I do spend any time concentrating with it. Aside from that, it’s my left eye, my good eye that’s been damaged, which naturally compensates for my right eye which has poorer sight. So, for the next few days, it’s going to be rather quiet and boring around here I’m afraid! :(

Wall Street Journal in Ireland

24 01 2006

Oooh, I see that the Wall Street Journal will shortly start circulation in Ireland, being printed down in Birr. It’s a paper (along with the Finincal Times) that I get to read far too little of, but always thoroughly enjoy when I do get around to reading it!

Going, Going, will be gone….

23 01 2006

Sven-Goran Eriksson, the English Football Manager, has decided, doubtless with a little pressure from the FA, to step down as the manager following on from this summers World Cup. This has come after Eriksson was trapped and exposed by the News of the World making some rather derogatory comments about various English football stars and managers within the Premiership.

Is he or is he not?!

23 01 2006

Jaysus, the past few days, the news here have been full of news that former Bishop Eamon Casey, is, then isn’t, then is, then isn’t, and now is coming back to live in Ireland. Casey had an illegitimate child and used parish funds to buy a house for his partner and her child back in the 1980’s, when Ireland was a very different place. Does it really need to make headline news nowadays?!
