Alonso wins home (!!??!!) race
12 06 2006So, yesterday saw the British Grand Prix take place, and as usual, ITV F1 (who are still amongst the best F1 broadcasters in the world) went into over-kill on the Brit Driver phenomenon. David Coulthard and Jenson Button were talked up as being the greatest thing since sliced bread all weekend, and ended up having a disaster of a race.
So, what did ITV do, well, the claimed Alonso (he being from Spain) as one of their own, and went completely over the top congratulating him on his home win. Yes, Alonso lives in Oxford, and has done for many years, but, claiming it as a home win for Alonso was a little over the top. Granted, Alonso himself did admit in the post race press conference that it did feel a bit special, like the feeling of winning at home, but, it’s funny how Alonso was Spanish all weekend until he had won the race! ![]()

When Barry McGuigan won, he was British.
When he lost he was Irish.
As Alex Higgins puts it:”it’s English until the shit hits the fan – after which it’s Irish”.
Same used to happen with Eddie Irvine, with Murray Walker being the most guilty of this. However, you can somewhat understand how they would get mixed up about people from Northern Ireland, claiming someone from Spain though is an entirely different matter! ;o)
