Some book recommendations

14 06 2006

Okies, its been a while (a very long while!) since I’ve recommended any books to you here. I’ve just picked up two really good books over the past few days, both times without looking, both times under the same circumstances, when I was going to the book shop specifically to look for one book, landed in, forgot what it was and ended up buying a really good, random book instead. Definately the way to go shopping, except for it’s expensive, as you have to keep going back to buy the book that you wanted, and keep end up getting something completely different! :)

Anyways, the two I’ll recommend are entirely different. What I picked up todya is fotolog book, a photo-book that contains a collection of photographs (and some comments) from the fotolog.com photo-blog site. It’s really fun and quirky, and the standard of photography from what I’ve seen so far is really, really impressive.

As for the other book, well, this will come in very handy in the future. The Not For Tourists guide to New York City is a brilliant concept, and a brilliant book. Written by New Yorkers for New Yorkers, tourists and people planning on moving to the city alike, it contains nothing but pratical information on the likes of where to shop, eat, park, drive, live, etc. It’s not a tourist guide, though, it can come in very handy for someone looking to wander off the regular NY tourist trail and start exploring neighbourhoods, and the way New Yorkers live.

Not For Tourists also produce books for a number of other cities through the US, and I’d really recommend them in conjunction with a regular tour book if you are considering going to any of these cities.
