Gmail finally does IMAP

24 10 2007

Ooh, this is interesting. To me, the killer feature lacking from Google’s great Gmail was the lack of IMAP mail support. In fact, it’s probably the biggest reason why I moved all my mail away from Gmail last year and over onto my own server. But, there are some reports starting to filter through that Google is starting to add IMAP support to Gmail accounts. This is most interesting, and certainly something well worth investigating. Especially so if you’re someone, like me, who likes to use a mail client as opposed to Gmail’s web interface, and also uses multiple machines throughout the day.

UPDATE: It appears that they are only offering this to a limited number of people at the moment (of which I am not one) and I’m not sure what it takes to get yourself enabled. Added to that, when I search for IMAP in the Gmail support site, I get told that they don’t currently support IMAP! :(

UPDATE 2: It’s now official!

In search of a new photoblog

23 10 2007

I want to resurrect my Photoblog for a number of reasons, principally though, I want to get back to setting myself a task of posting a picture a day as a means to try and kick my ass into gear and get taking photos again. I’ve been lacking motivation on that for the past few months.

I’ve decided as part of this, I want to look at migrating my blogs away from where they are hosted now over onto my own server for more control (and to save me having to pay Paul all that money!

The technical aspects of it are trivial to me, what’s puzzling me is what photoblog theme / platform I should go with. I am very happy with Wordpress as my blogging tool of choice, however, it’s support for Photoblogs is not the best. I have yet to find a theme that I’m really happy with. Ideally I’d like something a bit funky and slick, I’m not against using some flash or ajax (though I’d like to keep away from JavaScript). If anyone can suggest any particularly good themes, or even blogging platforms that I could use, then please let me know. It doesn’t have to be Wordpress either, I’ve got my mind open to all suggestion! :)

Is it just a phase I’m going through?

22 10 2007

Courtesy of Kassie, I’m after getting hooked on Facebook. I’m not sure that this is a good thing, or if this is something that I’m going to stick with. I really just don’t need yet another social networking profile. I have found that Facebook is quite interesting though, it’s nice and simple, feels far more grown up than Bebo and Myspace, and actually has far more people on it that I know than anything else. Maybe I’ll stick with it for a little while and see if I find it useful, but, no doubt I’m going to loose interest in a few days and it’s going to disappear into the background much like every other social networking site that I’ve used.

A lesson in banking and investments

12 10 2007

THIS APPEARED ON CRAIG’S LIST

What am I doing wrong?

Okay, I’m tired of beating around the bush. I’m a beautiful (spectacularly beautiful) 25 year old girl. I’m articulate and classy.

I’m not from New York. I’m looking to get married to a guy who makes at least half a million a year. I know how that sounds, but keep in mind that a million a year is middle class in New York City, so I don’t think I’m overreaching at all.

Are there any guys who make 500K or more on this board? Any wives? Could you send me some tips? I dated a business man who makes average around 200 - 250. But that’s where I seem to hit a roadblock. 250,000 won’t get me to central park west. I know a woman in my yoga class who was married to an investment banker and lives in Tribeca, and she’s not as pretty as I am, nor is she a great genius. So what is she doing right? How do I get to her level?

Here are my questions specifically:

- Where do you single rich men hang out? Give me specifics- bars, restaurants, gyms

-What are you looking for in a mate? Be honest guys, you won’t hurt my feelings

-Is there an age range I should be targeting (I’m 25)?

- Why are some of the women living lavish lifestyles on the Upper East Side so plain? I’ve seen really ‘plain Jane’ boring types who have nothing to offer married to incredibly wealthy guys. I’ve seen drop dead gorgeous girls in singles bars in the east village. What’s the story there?

- Jobs I should look out for? Everyone knows - lawyer, investment banker, doctor. How much do those guys really make? And where do they hang out? Where do the hedge fund guys hang out?

- How you decide marriage vs. just a girlfriend? I am looking for MARRIAGE ONLY

Please hold your insults - I’m putting myself out there in an honest way. Most beautiful women are superficial; at least I’m being up front about it. I wouldn’t be searching for these kind of guys if I wasn’t able to match them - in looks, culture, sophistication, and keeping a nice home and hearth.

THE ANSWER

Dear Pers-431649184:

I read your posting with great interest and have thought meaningfully about your dilemma. I offer the following analysis of your predicament.

Firstly, I’m not wasting your time, I qualify as a guy who fits your bill; that is I make more than $500K per year. That said here’s how I see it.

Your offer, from the prospective of a guy like me, is plain and simple a crappy business deal. Here’s why. Cutting through all the B.S., what you suggest is a simple trade: you bring your looks to the party and I bring my money. Fine, simple. But here’s the rub, your looks will fade and my money will likely continue into perpetuity…in fact, it is very likely that my income increases but it is an absolute certainty that you won’t be getting any more beautiful!

So, in economic terms you are a depreciating asset and I am an earning asset. Not only are you a depreciating asset, your depreciation accelerates! Let me explain, you’re 25 now and will likely stay pretty hot for the next 5 years, but less so each year. Then the fade begins in earnest. By 35 stick a fork in you!

So in Wall Street terms, we would call you a trading position, not a buy and hold…hence the rub…marriage. It doesn’t make good business sense to “buy you” (which is what you’re asking) so I’d rather lease. In case you think I’m being cruel, I would say the following. If my money were to go away, so would you, so when your beauty fades I need an out. It’s as simple as that. So a deal that makes sense is dating, not marriage.

Separately, I was taught early in my career about efficient markets. So, I wonder why a girl as “articulate, classy and spectacularly beautiful” as you has been unable to find your sugar daddy. I find it hard to believe that if you are as gorgeous as you say you are that the $500K hasn’t found you, if not only for a tryout.

By the way, you could always find a way to make your own money and then we wouldn’t need to have this difficult conversation.

With all that said, I must say you’re going about it the right way.

Classic “pump and dump.”

I hope this is helpful, and if you want to enter into some sort of lease, let me know.

Where’d London Go?!

Normally, I sleep with the blinds in the apartment up, I like waking up in the morning, rolling out of bed, and seeing my view of London out the window.

This morning I woke up rather bleary eyed and sleepy, and thought that I’d obviously closed the blinds last night, so headed over to open them up. Queue a dazed and confused Daragh as he tried to pull up the blinds that were already up, and figure out what exactly was going on. Turns out, there had been a severe weather warning issued for extremely dense fog, and this is what was confusing me. I could not see a thing. The building next door is about 20 feet away from mine, and even that was barely visible, never mind Canary Wharf or the city in the background. It was a very cool but eerie feeling. I couldn’t even see the ground below me which was very wierd!

Anyways, fog is now gone and it’s a beautiful sunny day in London now, and the forecast is good, with temperatures forecast to get up to 20 degrees over the weekend which is a bit mad for mid October!

NO NO NO!!!

PLEASE, it’s early October still, can we please have no more mention of Christmas for the next 6 weeks at least!!! Grrrr!

Using self signed ssl certificate with Nokia mail

4 10 2007

I’ve just been given a new Nokia E65 courtesy of work, and, as well as setting it up as sip phone, I wanted to be able to access my personal mail from it.

I ran into one rather annoying problem with this however. I am using a ssl cert that is self signed on my imap server, and, unfortunately, the mail app has no way of saving the cert on the phone, resulting it in continuously bugging me to accept the cert every time it tries to access my mailbox. This is a real pain, and entirely counter productive. There is a way around it, but it’s not especially easy. Then again, if you’re running your own imap and smtp server with self signed certs, chances are this will make total sense to you:

Login to your server and convert CA from .pem format to .der format
cd /path/to/cert
openssl x509 -outform der -in ca.pem -out ca.der
cp /path/to/ca.der /path/to/httpd/htdocs/
cd /path/to/httpd/htdocs/
vi /path/to/mime.types
(add the end of the file, add the following line)
application/x-x509-ca-cert der
restart apache

Once you have done this, you then need to browse from your phone to the location of the ca.der file. When there, click on it, and you should be prompted to install the cert. Once this is done, hey presto, no more bugging! :)

Blogroll is broken

Yes, yes, I know my blogroll is currently broken, I’m playing with a few different things on the blog at the moment, and it might be broken on and off for the next few days!

East London Hockey Club

2 10 2007

Does anyone know of any decent (field) hockey clubs in East London, or of any sites out there on the wonderweb where I might go about finding hockey clubs in London? I’m looking at getting back into playing again, more just to have fun and get tucked into the social side of things than to take it too seriously (I always end up saying that, and then end up wanting to be back playing for the 1st’s!). Google hasn’t been too helpful to date, so, anyone familiar with hockey in London out there, now’s a good time to speak up (that includes you Anna!!).

UPDATE:

I’ve now found out about East London Hockey Club and Wapping Hockey Club via England Hockey so gonna check out a little more about them later! :)
